One of rock’s most unmistakable voices went silent on Thursday when Bonnie Tyler, the Welsh icon behind one of the most anthemic power ballads ever recorded, passed away in a hospital in Portugal at 75. Her family announced the news via Facebook, noting she died after complications from an illness she’d been undergoing treatment for—just two months after emergency intestinal surgery had left her hospitalized in May.

Tyler’s career arc reads like a masterclass in longevity. Born Gaynor Hopkins in Wales on June 8, 1951, she was discovered singing in a club by a talent scout in 1975 and quickly signed to RCA Records under her stage name. Her early hits—Total Eclipse of the Heart, Lost in France, It’s a Heartache—proved she had staying power, but it was the 1983 release of“Total Eclipse of the Heart”from her fifth album, Faster Than the Speed of Night, that cemented her place in pop culture immortality. The song spent four weeks atop the Billboard Hot 100, became one of the best-selling singles of all time, and earned her a Grammy nomination for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance at the 1984 Grammy Awards. That same year, she landed another top 40 hit with“Holding Out for a Hero”from the Footloose soundtrack.

What made Tyler special wasn’t just one monster hit—it was her refusal to fade. Over decades, she released 18 studio albums. Her 2021 record, The Best Is Yet to Come, marked her final studio album, but she continued releasing singles afterward, proving the raspy powerhouse in her was far from done. In a 2021 interview with The Sun, she’d insisted she’d never retire, citing Tom Jones as her inspiration:“His voice is as strong as ever—and he’s got 10 years on me.”

Tyler married Robert Sullivan in July 1973, and the couple never had children. Sullivan survives her. For the millions who’ve belted out“Total Eclipse of the Heart”in their cars, at karaoke bars, and in shower stalls across generations, her voice—that unmistakable, soaring instrument—remains forever etched in the soundtrack of their lives.
