The 1970s belonged to a lot of musical families, but few shaped the sound of soul and R&B quite like The Sylvers. Foster Sylvers, the standout child star who helped define the group’s sultry, funk-inflected pop sound, has died following a battle with stage 4 pancreatic cancer. He was 64.

Foster’s brother Leon Sylvers III confirmed the news, sharing that Foster passed away in hospice. The loss marks another chapter in a family legacy marked by extraordinary talent—and, tragically, by loss. His brother Edmund died in 2004 from lung cancer, and their youngest sibling Christopher died in 1985 at just 18 years old.

The Sylvers were everywhere in the’70s.“Fool’s Paradise,”“Boogie Fever,”and“Hot Line”became fixtures on radio and dancefloors, and the group cycled through various lineups that kept the music fresh and energetic. But Foster stood out as a bassist—not just within the family act, but as a supporting player for other major artists. He brought his musicianship to Dynasty and to soul legend Evelyn“Champaign”King, proving he was more than just a pretty face from a famous musical family. He also pursued his own solo work, establishing himself as a serious musician in his own right.

What made The Sylvers enduring wasn’t just the novelty of a family working together—it was their genuine musicianship and their ability to evolve with the era. Foster embodied that. From the glitter and funk of the mid-’70s to supporting work behind other stars, he remained a working, respected musician. That kind of staying power, especially for someone who started as a child star in an era when most of those acts faded fast, is its own kind of legacy.

The Sylvers may not dominate streaming playlists or get the same revival attention as some of their contemporaries, but their fingerprints are all over the soul and R&B DNA of the decade. Foster Sylvers helped make that happen. He was 64.
