The Pardon That Won't Go Away: Trump Still Weighing Diddy's Clemency Plea

It’s a story that just keeps coming back. Nearly a year after reports first surfaced that President Donald Trump was“vacillating”on commuting Sean“Diddy”Combs’sentence, the music mogul’s potential path to freedom is once again making headlines—and apparently still rattling around the White House.

According to CBS News, Diddy remains one of several high-profile names Trump has been privately considering for pardons as he prepared to huddle with advisers Friday over a fresh batch of clemency decisions. The catch? The White House pardon team isn’t expected to formally recommend him. But as one White House official made clear, Trump is ultimately the one calling the shots on any clemency-related actions—and that door, it seems, remains cracked open.

The whole situation has a familiar ring to it. Back in October, TMZ reported that Trump was internally torn over whether to commute Diddy’s sentence while some White House staffers urged him not to. The White House Communications Office disputed that reporting at the time, but TMZ stood by the story. Then in November, Diddy was reportedly bragging to fellow inmates at FCI Fort Dix that he expected a presidential pardon early in 2026. Fast forward to January, though, and Trump told the New York Times he’d received a letter from Diddy seeking clemency and that he wasn’t considering it. So much for that prediction.

Here’s where it gets murkier: Diddy was sentenced to four years in federal prison after being convicted in October 2025 on two counts of transportation to engage in prostitution. He was acquitted of the more serious sex trafficking and racketeering conspiracy charges. His release date was recently moved up to February 23, 2028, from April 2028—a shift that might suggest shifting winds, or simply reflect standard prison administration adjustments.

What this all really signals is a presidency that operates in real time, with decisions made and unmade behind closed doors. Trump has shown a willingness to use his pardon power broadly and sometimes unpredictably. The fact that Diddy’s name keeps circulating suggests either persistent lobbying efforts or genuine internal deliberation. Whether that translates into actual clemency remains anyone’s guess, but the wall between“not considering”and“still mulling”turned out to be thinner than a January statement suggested.
