Princess Bajrakitiyabha Mahidol of Thailand has passed away at 47 after spending more than three years in a coma. The prominent royal family member died Thursday at a hospital in Bangkok, according to the Bureau of the Royal Household. What started as a routine afternoon training dogs in December 2022 became a medical crisis that would define the final chapter of her life—a mycoplasma infection left her unconscious, and she never fully recovered.

The loss marks an end to a life of remarkable public service. Bajrakitiyabha, known to many as Princess Bha, wasn’t a ceremonial royal living behind palace walls. She earned her law degree at Thammasat University, pursued a master’s in law at Cornell University, and built a career as a public prosecutor dedicated to criminal justice reform. Between 2012 and 2014, she served as Thailand’s ambassador to Austria. In 2017, she was appointed goodwill ambassador for the U.N. Office on Drugs and Crime, lending her platform to an issue close to her heart: the rehabilitation of female convicts.

Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul honored her legacy in a televised address, describing Bajrakitiyabha as a pride of Thailand and noting that her commitment to building a society rooted in kindness, justice, and equality would serve as a moral guide for future generations. It’s a fitting tribute to someone who chose to use her position not for pageantry, but for purpose—working quietly but steadily to reshape how society treats its most vulnerable populations.

Her three-year hospitalization drew international attention to her condition, a reminder that no amount of privilege shields a person from sudden illness or its unpredictable aftermath. Yet even in those silent years, her earlier work spoke louder than words ever could.
