Steve Ellis, frontman of the British pop-rock band Love Affair, died at 76 on the evening of October 30, 2026. His official Facebook page said he passed after complications from a chronic illness, surrounded by loved ones.
Ellis was still a teenager when Love Affair’s cover of“Everlasting Love”spent two weeks at No. 1 on the U.K. singles chart in 1968. More top 10 hits followed, including“Rainbow Valley”and“A Day Without Love.”He left the band in 1969, later formed Ellis, joined Widowmaker, and eventually stepped away from music to work at the docks. A 1981 forklift accident severely injured his feet and led to years of surgeries and recovery, but he returned to touring with Steve Ellis’Love Affair from 1991 to 1998. His 2008 solo album Best of Days featured contributions from Roger Daltrey and Paul Weller.
“Everlasting Love”has been covered countless times, but Ellis’s version remains the one that defined the song for a generation of U.K. listeners. That kind of voice doesn’t really fade.
