A bizarre and alarming trend is spreading across social media: influencers on SkinnyTok are encouraging their followers to intentionally catch Cyclospora, a parasite that causes severe diarrhea, as a weight loss shortcut. Using hashtags like“diarrhea diet”and“Cyclospora skinny,”content creators are posting videos of themselves eating contaminated food in hopes of contracting the illness. The motivation behind this dangerous behavior stems from the fact that Cyclospora infection can result in 15-20 pounds of weight loss. However, what these influencers aren’t highlighting is that this weight loss is almost entirely water weight that returns once symptoms resolve, according to registered dietitian Bonnie Roney.
The timing of this trend couldn’t be worse. The CDC is currently investigating a Cyclospora outbreak that has affected 1,645 people across 34 states since May 1st, with Michigan experiencing the hardest hit at over 2,600 cases. The outbreak has been traced to contaminated fresh produce including raspberries, lettuce, cilantro, and basil, and Taco Bell is currently under investigation as a potential source. Beyond the temporary water weight loss, health experts warn that intentional foodborne illness can cause lasting damage to gut bacteria and severely impact a person’s long-term relationship with food.
This trend represents a breaking point in how social media amplifies unhealthy body image standards and eating disorders. Young adults already struggling with body image are now being told by influencers they trust that intentionally poisoning themselves is acceptable. The pressure to achieve unrealistic thinness has reached a dangerous new low. What do you think should happen to influencers who promote health-threatening trends?
