Raye took home the 2026 Mercury Prize on Thursday night in Newcastle for her second album,‘This Music May Contain Hope’, and the timing could not be better. The victory landed the evening before her Royal Albert Hall orchestral show and two days ahead of her 29th birthday. In the winners’room she said the award made her feel“seriously seen”and called it“the best birthday present I could have asked for.”
The win carries extra weight because it came against a shortlist stacked with majors and legends alike, including Paul McCartney, Florence + The Machine, Dave, Suede and JADE. Raye released the album independently after her well-publicised label struggles, and the record repaid her with a UK Number One and a five-star NME review. She also revealed she was skipping celebrations to rest before the Royal Albert Hall performance, where she plays the album in full with an orchestra.
The story around the album has opened up bigger conversations too, especially around men’s mental health and the song‘I Know You’re Hurting’. Which track from‘This Music May Contain Hope’is on repeat for you right now? Tell us in the comments.
