The Rams lost one of their defining defensive voices this week. LeRoy Irvin, the lockdown cornerback who anchored Los Angeles’secondary throughout the 1980s, has passed away at 68. The news came Thursday via his former teammate Eric Dickerson, who shared a heartfelt tribute on Instagram.

Irvin wasn’t just a football player—he was the kind of competitor who defined an era. Drafted 70th overall in 1980 out of Kansas, he spent most of his career with the Rams, from 1980 to 1989, before finishing up with the Detroit Lions in 1990. Those credentials don’t fully capture what made him special: 35 career interceptions, 11 touchdowns, and three First-team All-Pro selections. In an age before the secondary was flooded with coverage schemes and zone defenses, Irvin was a ballhawk who could lock down receivers one-on-one. That’s the kind of player who becomes a building block.

What struck Dickerson most, though, wasn’t the stats.“Leroy wasn’t just a lockdown corner and a fierce competitor on the field; he was a true friend and a great man who always brought incredible energy,”Dickerson said in his Instagram post. It’s a reminder that the best players often leave a deeper mark off the field than their highlight reels suggest.

Details about Irvin’s passing haven’t been released yet. Rams Nation is mourning the loss of a cornerstone of their defensive legacy, and the entire football community is sending thoughts and prayers to the Irvin family.
