Prosecutors: Lindsay Clancy's Actions Show Deliberate Cruelty, Not Impulse

The details emerging in the case against Massachusetts mom Lindsay Clancy paint a troubling picture of what prosecutors say amounts to methodical, intentional harm—not a momentary breakdown.

On January 24, 2023, Clancy allegedly strangled her three children—Cora, Dawson, and Callan—using exercise bands in the basement of their Duxbury home. But it’s not just what happened that matters to prosecutors building their case. It’s how they believe it happened, and what that reveals about her state of mind.

In a new motion, prosecutors are pushing to include the 911 call from Clancy’s husband, Patrick, in their trial evidence. That call captures the moment he discovered what had occurred and begins screaming,“She killed the kids!”as he finds each child in the basement with an exercise band around their neck. What prosecutors argue is particularly significant: Patrick was able to remove the bands quickly when responders arrived. That speed, they contend, tells a crucial story. It suggests Clancy didn’t simply tie the bands and leave. Instead, they allege she actively, manually pulled each band tight around each child’s neck until they died—demonstrating what they describe as“extreme atrocity and cruelty.”

It’s a stark counterpoint to Clancy’s defense strategy. Her attorney isn’t contesting that she killed her children, but plans to argue she was severely overmedicated and suffering from postpartum psychosis at the time. Clancy and Patrick have both filed lawsuits against her treating physicians. She’s also planning to ask the jury for a not guilty by reason of insanity verdict.

The trial is scheduled for July 20. What unfolds in that courtroom will hinge on whether a jury believes the evidence shows deliberate, cruel intent—or a woman whose mind was fractured beyond her control.
