Pound Dog Repays Owner's Kindness by Saving Him From House Fire

That’s the unlikely but very real story unfolding in Whakatāne, New Zealand, where a man’s choice to adopt a nine-month-old rescue dog named Hazel turned into an act of heroism last Friday. The house fire that erupted in the early hours could have been catastrophic—but Hazel had other plans. With a well-placed bite, she jolted her owner awake just in time for him to escape. All he ended up with was smoke inhalation. The house, unfortunately, didn’t survive the blaze.

What makes this story hit even harder is Hazel’s backstory. This gentle girl had already been surrendered twice by previous owners before landing at JDC Rescue. By most measures, she’d learned to expect disappointment. But when her new owner decided to bring her home, something shifted.
