Poppy Forced to Skip Performance at Upheaval Festival as Wildfire Smoke Creates Hazardous Air Quality

Rock singer Poppy had to sit out her headlining performance at Upheaval Festival in Grand Rapids, Michigan on Friday night after wildfire smoke created hazardous air quality conditions. The Air Quality Index reached 350 plus, exceeding the EPA’s hazardous threshold of 300 and creating what the agency classifies as an emergency health condition. Michigan was operating under a statewide air quality alert throughout the festival, and despite organizers’monitoring efforts, conditions became too dangerous for Poppy to safely perform her vocal set.

Rather than cancel entirely, Poppy’s band took a creative approach and performed an instrumental-only set while wearing respirator masks beneath their stage masks. The decision kept energy flowing for festival attendees while prioritizing everyone’s health and safety. Poppy addressed her absence on Instagram Stories, explaining that she was physically unable to breathe in those hazardous conditions and praising the fans who braved the environment to stay. She emphasized that safety remains the top concern for both her team and festival organizers.

This incident marks the second major disruption to one of Poppy’s festival performances this season, following a lightning-related cutoff at Welcome to Rockville in May. As climate change continues to create unpredictable weather patterns and increased wildfire activity, festivals and outdoor events are facing new challenges in protecting both artists and attendees. Have you experienced air quality issues in your area, and how has it changed the way you attend outdoor events?
