An 86-year-old driver found himself at the center of a hit-and-run investigation after authorities in Napa County determined he was behind the wheel of a brown convertible that struck a parked vehicle in Yountville, California. That driver is Paul Pelosi, husband of former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

According to the Napa County Sheriff’s Department, officers responded to a report of a car crashing into an unoccupied parked vehicle. The parked car sustained major rear damage, with the front right tire forced onto the curb. Witnesses told police the brown convertible stopped briefly before driving away from the scene—a detail that matters significantly in how authorities classify the offense.

A short time later, officers located a vehicle matching that description disabled on the roadside. The damage to the front right aligned precisely with what would be expected from the collision. When officers spoke with Paul, he acknowledged hitting something earlier but claimed he didn’t know what it was. The Napa County Sheriff’s Department determined Paul was operating the vehicle at the time of impact. Importantly, officers also established he was not under the influence of alcohol.

The sheriff’s office has submitted a report to the district attorney’s office recommending a misdemeanor hit-and-run charge for property damage. Henry Wolford, the Napa County Sheriff’s spokesperson, confirmed the recommendation to TMZ. Paul was not arrested. The Pelosi family has not yet responded to requests for comment.

Hit-and-run statutes typically hinge on two elements: causing damage and then leaving the scene without providing required information or assistance. The distinction between misdemeanor and felony charges often turns on whether injuries occurred. In this case, since the parked vehicle was unoccupied, the charge reflects property damage only. At 86, Paul joins a broader conversation about aging drivers and roadway safety—though the specifics of this incident remain focused on the legal question of whether he fulfilled his obligations at the moment of impact.
