Nicolas Cage Says He's "Currently a Little Bit Homeless" After Sinkhole Wrecks Malibu Mansion

Nicolas Cage showed up to L.A. Comic Con this weekend with a very on-brand update: a sinkhole swallowed the driveway of his $10.5 million Malibu beachfront home in September, and he’s been living in hotels ever since.“I’m currently a little bit homeless,”he told the crowd.“Something happened to my house in Malibu so I’m just sort of living in hotels.”Heavy rain and coastal erosion caused the collapse, and the resulting hole blocked emergency access, forcing Malibu to mark 31 properties unsafe, with seven homes flagged and 24 red-tagged.

Cage didn’t waste time. He filed three permits within days to install sandbags and shoring to save the property, and he’s clearly not giving up on it. But here’s the detail that’s winning people over: he still took his 4-year-old daughter August trick-or-treating in Santa Monica, and he told the Comic Con crowd he planned to end the night watching“The Shining.”No trick-or-treaters at his own place this year, for obvious reasons.

The whole situation is a very loud wake-up call about coastal erosion and storm damage, and how the homes most exposed to it aren’t always the ones you’d expect. Some of his neighbors are dealing with the same disaster, no movie money required.

Would you keep fighting to save a cliffside house, or would a sinkhole be your sign to move? Tell us on our socials.
