There’s a difference between making a tough call and making an excuse—and Pittsburgh Mayor Corey O’Connor just made that distinction crystal clear.
Country music star Morgan Wallen canceled his Saturday performance at Acrisure Stadium, citing severe weather forecasts. He claimed his team had been in touch with local officials who encouraged him to pull the plug. It sounded reasonable enough on the surface. But when Mayor O’Connor went on KDKA Radio to set the record straight, the story fell apart faster than a concert setlist.
According to the Mayor, there was zero contact between Morgan’s camp and Pittsburgh’s Public Safety office or his administration.“There was no contact to Public Safety or my administration so however the artist and his team picked to not have the show, that was on them, there was no consulting for Public Safety or the City of Pittsburgh,”O’Connor told the station. He also stated that based on what he’d heard, Morgan didn’t even give Acrisure Stadium a heads-up. O’Connor added:“If you’re going to say that you consulted…that’s one story. We, again, had no record of that from public safety director, all the way down.”
Here’s where it gets awkward: the weather cleared up. While parts of Pennsylvania got soaked, Pittsburgh didn’t get anywhere near the rain that was supposedly coming. So not only does the consultation story not check out, but the reasoning for the cancellation didn’t play out the way Morgan said it would.
This one stings because it suggests either Morgan’s team completely botched the communication or the decision was made without actually talking to the people who could have given an informed assessment. Either way, fans showed up expecting a show, and a city official is now on record calling out the narrative. When a mayor goes public with specifics like this, it’s hard to brush off as a misunderstanding.
