Mexico is gearing up for a massive solar energy expansion that’s sure to shine a light on its clean energy goals. The Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) has plans to bolster the Puerto Peñasco solar complex in Sonora, increasing its capacity to a staggering 1 gigawatt. With a hefty investment of 30 billion pesos—about $1.62 billion—this expansion will not only solidify Puerto Peñasco’s reign as Latin America’s largest solar farm but also add 30% battery storage for a brighter future.

Expected to be completed by the end of 2028, this ambitious project includes additional solar power initiatives in Coahuila, aiming to put another 556 megawatts on the national grid. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has stated that this is a crucial step towards securing the country’s energy sovereignty. With sunshine to spare in Sonora, you have to wonder if they’re about to become the sunniest players in the renewable energy arena. Let’s just hope the panels don’t get too much sunburn!
