Mel Gibson's Resurrection Films: Two-Part Sequel Set for 2027 and 2028, New Actor Playing Christ

Mel Gibson is returning to the biggest story he ever told. Twenty years after“The Passion of the Christ”became a global phenomenon, Gibson is filming a two-part sequel about the Resurrection, with part one set for release in May 2027 and part two in May 2028. He told CBN the event is“almost impossible to comprehend,”which is why he’s taking a broader, non-linear approach to the story.

One of the biggest changes is who’s playing Christ. Finnish actor Jaakko Ohtonen is stepping into the role, taking over from Jim Caviezel, who starred in the 2004 original. Gibson says the films stay rooted in Catholic and Eastern Orthodox tradition, drawing from the Gospels, Acts, St. Paul, St. Peter, and church mystics, while keeping the original’s“moving Caravaggio”visual style. The films will also depict heaven and hell and show how the Resurrection rippled through the disciples’lives. Gibson’s take on the ending:“We know who wins.”
