Dating apps might have a swipe problem, and a new app called Hoppy thinks scrapbooks are the answer. Built specifically for Gen Z, Hoppy swaps static profiles and endless swiping for scrapbook-style personality pages centered on the things you actually love — favorite albums, running jokes, even your go-to jogging route. The app was cofounded by Julian Hislop, who helped launch Tinder in the UK and was an early Bumble team member, alongside Chloe Hall, a former marketer at ELLE, Glossier, and Starface.
The timing tracks with the data: a Forbes survey found 79 percent of Gen Z daters feel burned out by dating apps, many of which were built before most of their users were old enough to date. Hoppy leans into that fatigue by offering communication options like text, photos, video, music, and voice notes, formats meant to be tough for AI chatbots to fake. It also rolls out“Safe Date”features including check-ins and an easy-way-out call, plus in-app perks designed for real-world dates.
The bigger question is whether personality-first profiles can pull young daters back from the brink of deleting every app on their phone. With a $10 billion-plus dating market up for grabs, the industry is watching closely. Would you trade swiping for a scrapbook? Let us know in the comments.
