Lil Wayne revealed this week that the New York Yankees once sent him a cease-and-desist letter over the Young Money logo. The interlocking red-and-black“YM,”which became synonymous with the label during its late-2000s and early-2010s prime, apparently looked a little too similar to the Yankees’iconic“NY”mark. Wayne shared the story on the Sept. 16 episode of The Joint Venture alongside cohost Craig Carton.
The detail that makes this story unforgettable is where the logo lived. Wayne said he had it displayed on the elevator doors of his first Miami condo. He also made it clear there were no hard feelings. He stopped using the logo, switched to a new one, and said he respected the Yankees’position.“They’re legends,”he explained, which is a pretty gracious response to a legal threat.
Context matters here too. The Yankees’interlocking“NY”dates back to 1909, about a century before Young Money was dominating charts with a roster featuring Drake, Nicki Minaj and Tyga. Young Money dropped three compilation albums, and all of them landed inside the Billboard 200’s top 10. The Yankees may have won this round, but Wayne turned a cease-and-desist into a story worth telling. Would you frame that letter or hide it? Sound off in the comments.
