Fashion expert Lawrence Zarian didn’t just get to work on The Kelly Clarkson Show—he got the moment of a lifetime when he finally convinced his friend to sing with him.

Speaking at the Project Angel Food red carpet in Hollywood on Saturday, June 28, the 61-year-old reflected on the bittersweet reality of The Kelly Clarkson Show wrapping after seven seasons. What made his heart swell, though, wasn’t the finale itself. It was the duet he’d been chasing since day one.“From day one I’ve said,‘Let’s sing,'”Zarian explained.“And then I started pushing it a little bit, and again and again.”What began as a running gag eventually became reality when Clarkson herself approached him with a date on the books—giving Zarian just two weeks to prepare.

Never having sung professionally before, Zarian hired a voice coach and threw himself into rehearsals with the focus of someone who understood what was at stake. The song they chose:“Suddenly Seymour”from Little Shop of Horrors. What aired on the show, he emphasized, was the actual first time the pair ever performed together.“There’s a shot of Kelly looking at me that really touches my heart so deeply,”he said.“Because they say a picture really is worth a thousand words. And the way she loves me? The fact that she gave me that moment. It wasn’t about singing with Kelly. It was about singing next to Kelly.”

The show’s end, announced in February, came as Clarkson, 44, made the decision to step back from the daily grind of daytime television. Her statement was clear: prioritizing her children felt necessary and right. Having lost her ex-husband Brandon Blackstock to cancer in August 2025, Clarkson is choosing to put on her own oxygen mask first—and to be fully present for her daughter Rose and son Remy.

Zarian gets it. He knows exactly what’s next for his dear friend.“She’s going to be a mom,”he said simply.“She’s choosing her kids. She’s putting her own oxygen mask on—and hopefully writing a duet for us!”
