When you’re the father of NBA stars Lonzo Ball and LaMelo Ball, you’ve got the resources to dream big. So LaVar Ball decided his 8-bedroom, 11-bathroom, 15,000 square foot mansion needed something extra — a custom basketball court right there at home. Seems reasonable for a man whose kids grew up on hardwood and became professional players. Except there’s one problem: he apparently forgot to actually pay for it.
MD Steel Inc. has now filed a lawsuit against LaVar seeking roughly $221,928 in unpaid labor costs for the basketball court installation and subsequent home renovations. According to court documents, the total work expenses added up to around $970,000. The contractor says LaVar paid about $750,000 but left the rest hanging — a significant chunk of change that didn’t materialize when expected.
The timing makes things even messier. LaVar is simultaneously dealing with the fallout from his recent split from his wife of 30 years, Tina Ball, a separation he revealed on a podcast with YouTuber N3on just recently. So while he’s navigating a major life change, he’s now got a courtroom battle brewing that has nothing to do with basketball — at least not in any fun way.
There’s a certain irony here. A guy whose entire brand revolves around confidence, big talk, and winning is now stuck in a legal dispute over unpaid invoices. The home court advantage he was trying to build might end up costing him more in legal fees than the original $200K-plus shortfall. Sometimes the biggest opponents aren’t on the court at all.
