Kimmel Eviscerate Trump's Spencer Pratt Rigging Claims With Flawless Logic

Late-night host Jimmy Kimmel didn’t hold back when addressing President Donald Trump’s latest conspiracy theory. On Wednesday, June 10, the 58-year-old comedian took aim at Trump’s claim that Spencer Pratt’s failed Los Angeles mayoral primary bid was somehow rigged—a theory that falls apart the moment you actually think about how voting works.

The setup is delicious in its absurdity: Trump alleged that shadowy operatives somehow manipulated ballots to hurt Pratt while leaving untouched votes for Steve Hilton, the Trump-endorsed Republican who advanced in California’s gubernatorial primary on the same ballot. Kimmel’s response was surgical.“The votes for governor, they left untouched! It’s diabolical!”he riffed, before landing the killing blow:“It’s a miracle that people that are so incredibly stupid can be so incredibly smart at the same time.”

Here’s what actually happened: Pratt finished third in the June 2 primary with 25.52 percent of the vote, behind Mayor Karen Bass at 34.30 percent and L.A. City Councilwoman Nithya Raman at 29 percent. Under California’s system, the top two advance to a November runoff unless someone clears 50 percent outright. None of that suggests foul play—it suggests Pratt simply didn’t connect with enough voters. Meanwhile, Hilton cleared what Trump needed to win, which would only make sense if the supposed riggers were selectively targeting one race while ignoring another on the identical ballot. The logic is so broken that Kimmel couldn’t resist:“In a sane world, that statement would have been the moment where the nurse came in and put him to bed.”

The whole exchange underscores something we’ve all noticed—the casual willingness to invent explanations for outcomes you don’t like, rather than accept that sometimes you just lose. Pratt certainly didn’t help himself by previously vowing to leave Los Angeles unless he won, a promise Kimmel seized on earlier in the week with an offer of a U-Haul. (Pratt’s clap-back? A photo of his home destroyed in the 2025 Palisades Fire, reminding everyone that some losses are far more serious than electoral ones.) But Trump’s response to Pratt’s defeat suggests a deeper issue: the reflex to see rigging everywhere removes the possibility of learning anything from defeat.

What’s particularly striking is that this theory was floated publicly, during an Oval Office press conference, with no apparent concern for how transparently illogical it sounds. Kimmel’s audience laughed—not because they’re dismissing election integrity concerns generally, but because this particular claim makes no sense even on its face. And when a joke this obvious works this well, it’s usually because the reality is doing most of the heavy lifting.

Jimmy Kimmel Live! airs on ABC weeknights at 11:35 p.m. ET.
