Kim Kardashian is opening up about a new health diagnosis, and it strikes painfully close to home. In the Season 8 trailer for“The Kardashians,”the 45-year-old tells the camera,“I have something called esophagitis.”Moments later, an offscreen voice asks whether that was her father’s cause of death. Her answer, delivered through tears she’s fighting back:“I can’t…it makes me want to cry.”
Robert Kardashian, the attorney and family patriarch, died of esophageal cancer in 2003 at age 59, only eight weeks after his diagnosis. Esophagitis is related to esophageal cancer, but the Mayo Clinic notes that most cases aren’t clearly linked to inherited genes, so the connection isn’t a direct line. Even so, the trailer shows Kris Jenner getting emotional in a confessional, and it’s easy to see why this particular diagnosis carries extra weight for the family.
It’s also not Kim’s first health revelation on the show. Last season’s premiere featured her sharing a brain aneurysm diagnosis. In 2019, the family channeled their grief into something lasting by launching the Robert G. Kardashian Center for Esophageal Health at UCLA, which funds research and care for exactly the kinds of conditions Robert faced.
