John Frieda, the British hairstylist turned beauty mogul whose products have lived in bathrooms around the world, has died at 75. His salon shared the news Tuesday in an Instagram statement, saying he passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family. His cause of death has not been disclosed.

Frieda’s story is a classic“followed my own path”tale. Born in London in 1951, he was the son of a salon owner who hoped he’d become a doctor. Instead, he started working at the House of Leonard at 16 as an assistant, worked his way up through London’s competitive hair scene, and eventually became Princess Diana’s stylist and friend. His stepdaughter Asia Agnelli Lagrange called him“the best man to ever exist.”

Beyond the royal chair, Frieda built a haircare empire that made frizz control a household concept and trained a generation of stylists carrying his techniques forward. His influence shows up everywhere, from red carpets to drugstore shelves.

So tell us: what’s the John Frieda product you can’t live without, or the celebrity hair you’d copy in a heartbeat?
