Jane Asher Won't Watch the Beatles Biopics, and Her Reason Is Perfect

Jane Asher has one of the most fascinating footnotes in music history: she dated Paul McCartney from 1963 to 1968, they were engaged, and their relationship reportedly inspired classics like“And I Love Her”and“I’m Looking Through You.”So when Sam Mendes cast Lucy Boynton to play her in a quartet of interconnected Beatles biopics, you’d think Asher might want a front-row seat. Nope. She told The Telegraph she won’t watch the films, because otherwise everyone will ask her what she thought.

That answer is pure strategy. Asher has famously never discussed her years with McCartney, even turning down money to tell the story.“It was so long ago,”she said, and that’s the whole statement. The filmmakers did approach her, but she passed on being involved. Meanwhile, the four films, each told from a different Beatle’s perspective, land in theaters simultaneously in April 2028, with Paul Mescal as McCartney, Harris Dickinson as John Lennon, Joseph Quinn as George Harrison and Barry Keoghan as Ringo Starr.

So the biggest Beatles event in a generation is coming, and one of the few people who actually lived it is opting out in the most dignified way possible. Your move, everyone with a podcast.
