When tension bubbles up on a TV set, it’s usually the actors who take the heat. But Helen Mirren just threw a wrench in that narrative by enthusiastically defending Tom Hardy and signaling she’d jump right back into the Paramount+ thriller MobLand for a third season—even after the two had reported clashes during production on the United Kingdom set of Season 2.

In a Thursday interview with Variety, the Oscar-winner didn’t downplay what happened or pretend everything was smooth sailing. Instead, she reframed it entirely. Hardy, she said, is“the most amazing actor”and“a very special person,”and she’d return to work with him“in a f***ing heartbeat”alongside Pierce Brosnan. The key insight? She chalked the friction up to process, not personality.“Different actors have different processes,”Mirren explained.“I’ve learnt over the years that some people get to things faster. As long as what’s on the screen is fantastic, I’m totally chilled with however someone gets there.”

This is refreshing candor in an industry that usually handles on-set drama like a PR nightmare. The reported issues between Hardy and showrunner, writer, and executive producer Jez Butterworth were serious enough that Deadline reported in May the two“could no longer work together”on Season 2. But Mirren’s perspective suggests that creative friction isn’t automatically a relationship killer—it can actually be part of the process. She acknowledged that“the creative process is challenging”when“powerful artistic people working together”are in the room, and noted that“people will get their knickers in a twist.”Then came the kicker:“We will go forward, absolutely, and it will be even better.”

Mirren had already shown her cards on social media in late May, posting a photo of Hardy paired with“Love you now and always.”Now she’s doubling down, insisting the door isn’t just open for his return—it’s wide open. With MobLand Season 2 set to stream later this year, the question isn’t whether the show continues, but whether Hardy will be part of that future. Based on Mirren’s full-throated support and the fact that the door reportedly remains open, it seems less like a farewell and more like a brief intermission.
