Glenn Close, 79, Reveals Full Hip Replacement: "The Cane Is Temporary"

Glenn Close wants fans to know she’s fine. The 79-year-old actress posted an Instagram video Tuesday explaining why she’s been using a cane, after photos from the NewFest premiere of“La Bola Negra”earlier this month got people worried. Her answer was straightforward: she had a complete hip replacement, and her left hip was“in really bad shape”before surgery.

She made it clear the cane is temporary and that she’s feeling great. And she’s got the schedule to prove it. Close is set to attend the London premiere of“Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping”next week, followed by the New York premiere of“All’s Fair”season two, and she’ll receive an honorary Oscar at the 17th Governors Awards next month.

The whole announcement came with a signature Glenn Close touch: she filmed the video wearing a frownie facial patch, which is about as low-key as a health update from a Hollywood legend gets. Her stated priority is keeping herself in running order for whatever comes next, and by the looks of her calendar, that’s a lot.
