Four Beluga Whales Rescued From Shuttered Canadian Park Now Thriving at Chicago's Shedd Aquarium

In what might be one of the most heartwarming rescue stories of the year, four female beluga whales have successfully arrived at Chicago’s Shedd Aquarium after an extraordinary international operation. These beauties were trapped at Marineland in Ontario, a theme park that became synonymous with animal abuse allegations and institutional failures. When Marineland finally closed, the facility faced a crisis: thirty belugas with no funding for their care and nowhere to go. Desperate authorities even threatened euthanasia before permits were approved for transfer.

The logistics of moving these massive marine mammals across international borders turned into a logistical masterpiece. Each whale was carefully extracted from holding pools using cloth gurneys and lifted by crane into specially designed temperature-controlled containers. Refrigerated trailers transported them to the airport, where they boarded a Qatar Airways cargo aircraft bound for Chicago’s O’Hare. The three female whales, aged 27, 26, and 21, had bonded together as a sub-pod, so the rescue team ensured they traveled together to ease their transition.

Now at Shedd Aquarium’s Abbott Oceanarium, the whales are undergoing careful monitoring by veterinarians and animal behavior specialists. The team is watching for positive indicators including eating full diets, socializing with one another, and exploring their new habitat. Early reports show cautious optimism as the whales begin to acclimate. This rescue demonstrates not just international cooperation between NOAA and Canada’s Department of Fisheries and Oceans, but also humanity’s capacity to fix past wrongs when we commit to change. Of the 30 belugas being relocated from Marineland, 28 are heading to American aquariums while two await approval for a Spanish facility.
