There’s a reason“Matilda”is fiction. In real life, abusive classroom discipline doesn’t end with a heartwarming lesson—it ends with an arrest warrant.

On Monday at First United Methodist Christian School in Homestead, south of Miami, a 13-year-old student laughed during scripture reading. That minor disruption became the spark for what authorities say was a shocking act of punishment: teacher Michael Alvarez allegedly took the boy into the hallway and wrapped green painter’s tape around his mouth. According to an arrest affidavit obtained by CBS News Miami, the incident was captured on surveillance footage.

But here’s where it gets worse. The student wasn’t quietly sent back to class to contemplate his mistake. Alvarez allegedly brought him back into the classroom with his mouth still taped shut—which naturally caused even more disruption as other students began laughing at the sight. The boy eventually called his parents, and his father went straight to police.

The alleged victim’s father told the outlet his son was physically fine but understandably confused about what had happened. That’s the kind of psychological whiplash you get when an authority figure responds to a giggle with something that feels more like punishment from a dystopian novel than discipline in a faith-based school.

Michael Alvarez was charged with battery and released from Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center on Tuesday after posting bond. The case raises uncomfortable questions about what passes for classroom management in some institutions—and whether anyone involved stopped to consider what message silencing a child actually sends.
