Dave Kendall, the visionary creator and original host of MTV’s 120 Minutes, has passed away. The British television producer pitched one of the boldest ideas in music TV history: a show dedicated entirely to punk, post-punk, goth, synth-pop, ska, and underground music that mainstream radio wouldn’t touch. When 120 Minutes debuted on March 10, 1986, it became a cultural phenomenon, and Kendall’s tenure as host from 1989 to 1992 cemented him as one of the most important figures in bringing alternative music to mainstream audiences. Fellow MTV legend Matt Pinfield announced Kendall’s death this week and paid tribute to his authenticity and genuine love for the artists and fans he served.

What made Kendall special was that he wasn’t just reading names or playing songs. He actually believed in the music and the artists. In a 2016 interview, Kendall explained that 120 Minutes functioned as“a distribution channel for organic musical produce”at a time when college radio stations were the only other outlets for non-mainstream music. He connected with audiences in a way that felt real and unfiltered, giving a home to bands that would go on to define the 1990s sound. His influence extended far beyond MTV—Kendall continued working in television, DJing, and eventually hosted SiriusXM’s First Wave, keeping his mission alive throughout his career.

The loss of Dave Kendall is a reminder of how individual programmers shaped music culture in ways that algorithms simply can’t replicate today. Millions of listeners discovered their favorite bands through 120 Minutes, and that discovery process changed their lives. What was your first experience with 120 Minutes, and did it introduce you to an artist you still love?
