Danielle Pinnock’s journey to landing a role in the off-Broadway revival of‘The Whoopi Monologues’is the masterclass we all need. After discovering Whoopi Goldberg’s original 1984 Broadway show as a teenager, Pinnock spent over 20 years inspired by that performance. When she learned the new production was fully cast, she refused to accept that as a final answer. Instead, she tracked the show for months, flew to New York to pitch herself directly to director Whitney White, and when traditional channels stalled, she did something bold: she slid into the director’s Instagram DMs. The timing was almost too perfect. A cast member dropped out the very next day, leading to a whirlwind 48-hour audition-to-offer process that resulted in Pinnock getting cast alongside Kerry Washington, Kara Young, Dominique Fishback, and Kecia Lewis.
What makes this role even more meaningful is the character Pinnock plays: the‘Jamaican Lady,’a part that honors her own heritage as a first-generation Jamaican American. There’s also a beautiful full-circle moment when you consider that Pinnock previously appeared on‘Scandal’as‘Hairdresser Number One’in a crossover episode with Kerry Washington. Now they’re standing together on stage as equals, with Pinnock in a leading ensemble role. The actress herself described the experience as a“homecoming,”surrounded by Black women at the top of their game in a safe, trusting creative space.
The running through August 2026 at Lincoln Center Theater’s Mitzi E. Newhouse Theater, and what Pinnock’s story really teaches us is that sometimes persistence, preparation, and a willingness to take bold action are what separate dreamers from doers. She believed in herself enough to show up differently. What’s a goal you’ve been waiting on, and what bold action could you take to make it happen?
