In a remarkable effort to uplift literacy within underserved communities, the Book Fairies are on deck to distribute more than 25,000 free books across New York City and Long Island. This generous initiative is thanks to the support of ThriftBooks, the world’s largest online retailer of used books, who teamed up with the nonprofit to address a critical issue — the lack of access to quality literature. Since its inception in 2012, the Book Fairies have already donated an astounding six million books to Title I schools, educators, and community partners.

As volunteers gather at the central receiving and sorting area, they’re busy categorizing the freshly donated books by reading level and preparing them for distribution. Each book represents an opportunity for a child to ignite their imagination, build knowledge, and foster a lifelong love for reading. It’s especially poignant when you consider testimonials from educators; one teacher, overwhelmed with emotion, shared how she was denied funding to purchase a stack of books for her class but found them free at Book Fairies instead.

Inadequate access to books is a significant barrier to child literacy, a challenge Courtney Collins, Associate Executive Director for Book Fairies, knows all too well. This new influx of books is a game-changer, fulfilling crucial requests that were once unmet — turning hopes for literacy into tangible opportunities for children across the boroughs. With this massive donation, the Book Fairies are not just passing out books; they’re changing lives, one story at a time.
