Bode Miller's Drug Charges Vanish After Idaho Traffic Stop

When Olympic legend Bode Miller got pulled over during a traffic stop in Idaho on June 6, it looked like the start of a serious legal headache. Authorities found what they believed were drugs in the vehicle, and misdemeanor charges for drug possession and paraphernalia followed. But fast-forward to late June, and the whole case just dissolved—Fremont County Prosecutor Lindsey Blake announced the charges would be dismissed.

Here’s where it gets interesting: Miller’s attorney, Jeromy Stafford, says the confusion came down to a passenger. Court records initially alleged officers discovered psychedelic mushrooms during the stop. Miller later claimed he thought authorities were referring to marijuana and a pipe that belonged to someone else in the car. Turns out, that’s exactly what happened. Stafford tells us no drugs were found on Miller’s person, and the passenger has since taken responsibility for both the weed and the shrooms.

The prosecutor’s statement added another layer: Blake confirmed the deputy had probable cause to make the arrest, but the office recently received information that made dismissing the charges“in the interest of justice.”She declined to discuss specifics because the information relates to another active case. Translation: something else came to light that changed the calculus.

What’s notable here is the speed and finality. Most minor drug possession cases don’t land high-profile athletes in handcuffs in the first place—they’re typically handled with citations and releases, as Stafford pointed out. Miller had publicly stated he believed the charges wouldn’t hold once the facts were reviewed, and he was right. The Olympic skier walks away with his record clean and his confidence in the system, at least momentarily, restored.

This case is a reminder that even when the initial facts look damning, context matters. A traffic stop that seemed routine turned into a bigger problem than it needed to be, and then just as quickly unwound.
