Taylor Swift’s movie songbook now has an official ranking, and Billboard’s list covers 11 tracks stretching from 2009’s Hannah Montana: The Movie to this summer’s Toy Story 5. The headline:“I Knew It, I Knew You”debuted at No. 1 on the Hot 100, making it her highest-charting film song ever. She wrote it last summer and sat on it until the Pixar opportunity came along, then pulled it back out of her pocket.
The near-misses are almost as interesting.“Today Was a Fairytale”and“I Don’t Wanna Live Forever”with ZAYN both peaked at No. 2, while“Safe&Sound”from The Hunger Games won a Grammy for Best Song Written for Visual Media.“Beautiful Ghosts”from Cats earned a Golden Globe nomination and a Grammy nod, and“Sweeter Than Fiction”marked her first collaboration with Jack Antonoff, a partnership that shaped everything after.
The range is the real story here. Country Taylor, pop Taylor, movie-star Taylor who wrote songs for films she actually appeared in like Valentine’s Day and Cats, and soundtrack Taylor for movies she had zero screen time in, like Where the Crawdads Sing. Which of her 11 movie songs gets your top spot?
