Basement Stairs, Six Figures, and a Beverly Hills Mansion Mishap

When you’re hired to fix things at a $14 million Beverly Hills estate, the last thing you expect is to become the one needing repair. But that’s exactly what happened to handyman Eric Nieto, who’s now pursuing a substantial lawsuit against Lisa Vanderpump and Ken Todd over an injury he says he suffered while working at their 5-bedroom, 8-bathroom mansion.

The incident dates back to November 25, 2023, when Nieto was hired to perform handyman work at the couple’s 8,801-square-foot property. According to court documents, his job required him to use an interior stairway leading down to the basement. That’s where things went wrong. Nieto claims his left foot got stuck on a stair tread due to dangerous and poorly maintained conditions, causing him to lose his balance and take a hard fall. The result: a severe injury to his left lower leg and ankle that he says will require ongoing medical treatment.

Now, nearly two and a half years later, Nieto is asking for compensation in court. His demands total $195,000—$150,000 for pain and suffering, plus $45,000 for medical expenses. It’s a significant ask, but he argues the injury has had lasting consequences on his ability to work and live comfortably.

What’s interesting here is how Lisa and Ken have responded so far: they haven’t, at least not directly. According to sources close to the couple, they’ve referred the matter to their homeowner’s association. That move suggests they may be leaning on insurance to handle the claim rather than engaging in a personal legal battle. Whether that strategy works remains to be seen, but it does raise a question about responsibility and accountability when someone is injured while working on your property.

The case highlights a reality often overlooked in the glittering world of celebrity real estate: homes require constant maintenance, and that maintenance can be genuinely dangerous if corners are cut. A poorly maintained stairway might seem like a minor detail in a mansion that costs millions, but to someone earning a living with their body, it can change everything.
