American Idol Is Leaving Los Angeles After 24 Seasons, and Taxes Are the Reason Why

The show that turned Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood, and Jennifer Hudson into household names is officially leaving Los Angeles. American Idol is moving production to the Atlanta area for its 25th season, ending a 24-season run in LA. The reason is pretty straightforward: Georgia’s tax incentives for unscripted TV beat out California’s, which expanded its film and TV tax credit last year but wrote rules that exclude traditional reality and game shows. Idol didn’t qualify, and Georgia’s 20% base credit plus a 10% bonus made the decision easy.

The move is part of a bigger trend. The Masked Singer relocated to New Jersey earlier this year, lured by a tax credit worth up to 30%. Meanwhile, FilmLA reports that permitted on-location production fell 12.7% in the second quarter of 2026, and reality TV shoot days in Los Angeles are down nearly 63% from their five-year average. The productions aren’t just pausing, they’re packing up and heading to states that are willing to pay for them.
